August News Letter

Hello Everyone,

It’s time for a little news from the Amakhala Game Reserve!

Sadly I begin this news letter with very bad news.  For those of you, who had the opportunity to meet the wonderful Raymond from Bukela, you will be sad to hear that we recently lost him in a bad car accident.  We are devastated and our hearts are heavy with the loss.  He was such an amazing person who gave his all to each person that entered Bukela.  His funeral was on the 27th of August, and what a turn out.  There had to have been a couple of hundred people there.  Very touching to say the least. He will be missed, but his spirit lives on in everyone here, because not only did he always do his best for our guests and his colleagues, but he somehow taught the staff the same values.  We are so proud of each and every one of them for carrying on and doing such a great job.  Thank You Team Bukela!

On a lighter note, and a very special one – Bukela hosted our first wedding since Lion Roars took over the lodge.  It was a beautiful day, and it all went very well!  My only problem here is that there are too many photos I want to show you!  They are all so lovely!

After the day’s events, we took the lovely couple back to the Lodge, where they were welcomed and shown back to their room.  We had a hot bubble bath waiting with rose petals to lead the way, champagne to share in the bath and a gorgeous rustic wedding cake to cut after the delicious private dinner we served them in the privacy of their own room. They dined warmed by a gentle log fire and candles to set the mood.  Not that candles were needed! So needless to say, Mark & Wendy left Husband and Wife, and very happy to have had their dream bush wedding!

You know, sometimes we forget the gorgeous little creatures in the reserve, and this week I have noticed a couple of tortoises cruising around.  I just love them – and it also tells us that winter is on it’s way out and summer on it’s way in.  Hooray!

Since you last heard from me, we have welcomed the birth of a new baby boy buffalo.  Terribly sweet little fellow – we’re hoping for a couple of girls next time to extend our breeding programme.

Speaking of buffalo, we had an interesting walk in visitor down at Hlosi the other day. Our dominant male buffalo is a frequent visitor, and he thought he would just pop by to say hello.  Needless to say our guests were hypnotised by him.  He’s an impressive boy.

With the hot weather coming in, Bukela is also having great sightings of animals at our water hole. Captured the other afternoon was one of our Black Rhino making his way down to drink.  Our guests got a great view of him and some fabulous photos to take home to show the family.

Aside from all the goings on among the wildlife, we have had a fantastic month, and have been kept very, very busy – so a huge thank you to our Agents / Operators that continue to support us.

I will end off now and keep my eyes open for some more interesting shots or bits of news I can hopefully interest you with next month.

Take care & Bye for now,

 Kerry
